Just got notice of not renewing our policy, after 25+ years. Your article has always been on our back burner so it was easy to pull it up. Unfortunately, the cabins on either side of us and the empty lot behind us have NEVER exercised caution. I hate to think of the long haul we are about to embark upon.

Hi David and/or Jason,

I'm using the Mac to access the correct website URL. However, I can't see the August 2011 Newsletter. I've tried clicking on the link to the newsletter from the Home page, and also the News and Events section, and also the Blog. Same result each time. Nothing comes up. Seems like its in a loop somehow.

FYI, I'm using the latest version of FireFox for the non-Intel Mac, i.e. version 3.6.19, released last month.

I don't think its another brain-fade on my part. May I suggest that you check the access to the NewsLetter from a few other computers to make sure its actually there?

Regards,

Dave

I am adding comments to my brother, Merle Seigal's memories of the cabin on lot 67 on Lasson Drive. My parents Roxie & Cecil Seigal bought the lot when I was around 10 or so. It was such a beautiful area. I remember how blue the sky was and how close the stars were at night. They worked side by side and built this cabin for our family. When my brother Merle and I went back a couple of years ago to see the old place. We met the new owner Diane and her husband. They let us go in and look around. It seemed so much smaller to me. Some minor changes were made but mainly it was the same. I can remember one Christmas when the whole family was there. It had not snowed. We really wanted a white Christmas. Our youngest brother Gary made a wish on a large round river rock my father brought back from the Toulumne River. The next morning when we got up and came down stairs it had snowed and everything was white. What a great Christmas.

Be careful what you wish for. Indeed Strawberry has had a headache with the former water company. But now our rates have gone up and DOWC submits many rate hikes per year with the CPUC. Be careful what you wish for. You might want to talk to SPOA members or attend the annual SPOA meeting in July.

My personal response: I was cancelled twice earlier this year and my subsequent search for insurance led me to prepare/make the insurance presentation at our Sept annual member meeting. It seems pretty clear to me that many of the smaller, possibly underfunded, insurance companies are bailing out of the wildland areas of California. My third attempt to get insurance was successful (so far). I am paying more but that is the nature of the problem right now. What impressed me was that this company inspected our property themselves one day after I contacted them. Cal Fire say they will inspect individual properties. But in reality they are so short handed and probably underfunded that in practice it would be difficult for them to respond to a multitude of requests. Despite that, I would recommend you give it a try. Unfortunately, one property owner can be diligent about making his property as fire safe as possible only to have the effort compromised by surrounding properties either by proximity or neglect. I am sure insurance companies look at individual property risk in the context of the larger community risk. We are all in the same boat after all. It really takes a community effort to make Cold Springs as fire tolerant as practical.

FYI, This past Spring, Allstate Insurance notified us that our Cold Springs Homeowners Policy would not be renewed. The reasons were stated in a report prepared by a contracted inspector. We are not sure how any property would pass the criteria mentioned in the report. Subsequently we found coverage with AAA, but are concerned this policy might be cancelled.

Has anyone had a property inspection from a public source like the County Fire Service or State Forestry? We would be interested in actually having an independent inspection to see if we are complying with current standards. Please advise.

by him self on weekends and his vacation to build a two story cabin , I see now the address is
29670 lassen dr.--his brother Travis Seigal also purchased a lot and built an "A ' frame just across
the street.. Have many pictures of them under construction.it took dad a couple of years to get the cabin completed..Used the cabin as a home base to fish and hunt the area,--stanislaus-clarks fork-kennendy meadows-out to cherry lake I think there was a chalet at Cold Springs but it burned down..(not sure).any way place was sold in the 60's and recently was there and checked the old cabin out.. met some new owners and were the nicest of people. Took us in and gave a current tour of cabin and now are good friends., As i now live in oregon don't get much of chance to travel. the place after 50 years looked very good..

I've read the CS Water Company (Sandra Tucker) commentary and received the PUC notice in today's mail. We've had a very reliable water company here over many years and have not suffered the problems that Strawberry cabin owners faced over several years with the failing Strawberry Water Company. The rate increases sought by CS Water Company on balance seem reasonsable to me.

Not to be overly literal but a T1 line is, by definition, a wire. Perhaps they have a wireless connection with the bandwidth of a T1 line (1.5 Mb). In any case, it's great to see broadband extending further up the hill.
